Step 1: Positioning and Preparing the Keel Guard
To improve your kayak’s durability and protect your investment with the Keel Guard, start by placing it onto the bow of your kayak. Ensure it fits snugly with minimal gaps, marking the ideal spot using masking tape or a pencil. If gaps are present, gently apply heat to the Keel Guard using a heat gun while wearing a heat-resistant glove to shape it to your kayak’s contour.
Step 2: Cleaning and Surface Preparation
Thoroughly cleanse the mounting surface of your kayak using isopropyl alcohol and a clean cloth to remove any dirt or residue. For optimal adhesion, lightly sand the surface with sandpaper, then wipe it clean with isopropyl alcohol.
Step 3: Preparing the Keel Guard
Clean the inner surface of the Keel Guard using isopropyl alcohol and a cloth or paper towel. Ensure that both the Keel Guard and the kayak’s mounting surface are completely dry.
Step 4: Applying Marine Goop or Adhesive
Ensure that the Keel Guard is correctly positioned for attachment to your kayak. Use tape to mark the keel just beyond the Keel Guard’s ends as a reference point. Apply a small bead of marine Goop or your chosen adhesive 15mm (1/2 inch) down from each edge of the Keel Guard and a generous bead along the kayak’s centerline.
Step 5: Placing and Securing the Keel Guard
Delicately position the Keel Guard at the marked location, aligning it with the kayak’s hull contours. Apply gentle yet firm pressure to affix the Keel Guard to the kayak’s surface. If necessary, utilize masking tape to temporarily secure the Keel Guard while the adhesive sets.
Step 6: Allowing the Adhesive to Cure
After securing the Keel Guard, let the adhesive cure undisturbed for a minimum of 24 hours or according to the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions. This curing period ensures a strong and enduring bond between the Keel Guard and your kayak’s surface.
